Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)
109. CORNIX. (Perry 390)
ACTA siti Cornix ardenti repperit urnam,
Imus in hac modicam fundus habebat aquam.
Quam quoniam rostro nequiquam haurire laborat,
Callida non vanae consulit artis opus.
Undique collectos lapides deiecit in urnam,
Hac urnae labrum mox subit arte liquor.
Largiter hoc hausto sese rigat arida Cornix,
Est ita sedandi copia facta sitim.
Arte quidem nobis acquirere multa licebit,
Quae vis haud alias ulla parare potest.
Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate. |
