Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

115. APER EXCORS. (Perry 583)

CEPIT Aprum, cui mox unam praeciderat aurem
Rusticus, hac truncum passus abire fuit.
At fortuna novo casu cum redderet illum,
Quae superest, mutilum tunc simul aure facit.
At se rursus ubi hoc praedam venante dedisset
Obtruncare feram tum iubet ira manu.
Iamque suis affert exempto corde patronis,
Corque ioco ludens hunc habuisse negat.
Qui mala mille ferens olim non cautior exit,
Ille fit exitii causa pudenda sui.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
