Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

180. CULEX ET APES. (Perry 0)

PEne geluque, fumeque Culex cum mortuus esset,
Orat Apes secum non habitare vetent.
Denique cibos intra sua cerea tecta recepto,
Pro tali fuero munere gratus, ait.
Erudiam vestros ego natos arte canendi,
Sedulus bis vigili more magister ero.
Ex illo tunc una negans examine victum,
Arte tua nostris nil opus, inquit Apis.
Cum multo nobis meliorem discere possint
Auspicibus, quam te forte docente tuam.
Institui natos teneris ita convenit annis,
Victus ut his quaeri possit ab artis ope.

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***
The same same image appears at Fable 219, where it fits.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
