Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

269. CORVUS ET VULPES (Perry 0)

CUm Cervo cui forsan erant commercia, Vulpes
Esuriens tali dicitur usa dolo:
Induit haec laxam Monachi de more cucullam,
Atque precaturam se locat ante librum.
Ceu palmas erecta pedes simul illa priores,
Cumque illis oculos tollit ad astra suos.
Deplorans veluti vitae commissa prioris,
Hoc veniam gestu flagitat usa Deos.
Gallinarum ergo (suadent hoc pacta) cohorti
Corvus ut huc illas advocet arte iubet:
Miraque conversae de relligione recenset
Vulpis, et hac animal sanctius esse negat.
Et quid multa loqui refert, ait, ibitis ipsae
In nemus, urget ubi nunc pietatis opus.
Dedita divinis hic rebus ut optima Vulpes
Ferveat, hoc volupe [Reg: volup] cernere forsan erit.
Sponte sequi vellent ut, quo se verba vocabant
Haec Corui, stolidas ille movebat aves.
Sed monitae Gallo fraudem subolente reverti
Incipiunt, Corui duxerat unde dolus.
Cui credas vigili circumspice mente loquentum [(perhaps: loquendum)] ,
Ore solent blande verba carere fide.

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***
Compare also the image at Fable 68 (also does not fit). This might be an illustration for Perry 553.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
