Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

281. DE AVARO ET MONtibus aureis. (Perry 0)

QUod foret aureolis audiverat India venis
Quidam, quodque alias dives haberet opes.
Hanc adit ille viae per mille pericula terram,
Cui tamen optato spes sua fine caret.
Reddat inaccessos hic cum custodia montes,
Quam vigili dirae lumine gryphes agunt.
Spem periisse dolens sic ille, viaeque laborem,
In patriam tristi mente relegit iter.
Saepe parum prudens, quae non contingere possunt,
Expetit, effectu spes sed inepta caret.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
