CUm liquor effusi super amne nataret Olivi,
Hoc onere indigne se tulit unda premi.
Dante quod umores sese hauserit illius arbor,
Ut fecunda suas gignere posset opes.
At quia curat aquam nil, mox correptus Olivi
Consumi rapido coepit ab igne liquor.
Flammeus interea nil undam conficit ardor,
Qui minus hac vires ille morante valet.
Pro meritis pravi non respondere laborant,
Est sua simplicitas noxia saepe bonis.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate. |
