Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

96. CANIS MORDAX. (Perry 332)

TInnula de collo quidam suspensa gerebat
Aera (iubent haec quem signa cavere) Canis.
Praemia ceu sint haec sibi pro virtute, superbit,
Hoc alios temnens laetus honore Canes.
Hinc ait unus, erat cui iam sua grandior aetas,
Haec sibi tinnitu disce quid aera velint.
Signari pravos hoc mores indice noris,
Ne decus illa tui corporis aera putes.
Saepe placent homines scelerum sibi labe suarum,
Seque, quod est aliis turpe, decere putant.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
