16.114 Exercises

The following notes should help you in understanding the Practice Sentences provided by Croy. You might also find it very helpful to look at a Segmented Version of the sentences.

1. ὁ δοῦλος ἀπεκρίθη τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ, Ἀπεστάλην πρός σε ὑπὸ τοῦ κυρίου μου, ἀλλὰ οὐκ ἐλήμφθην εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου.

Note the aorist passive verbs ἀπεκρίθη, ἀπεστάλην and ἐλήμφθην. The preposition ὑπὸ is used to express the agent of the passive verb ἀπεστάλην.

2. ἤχθημεν εἰς τὴν ἔρημον φωνῇ ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν καὶ ἐκεῖ ὤφθη ἡμῖν ἄγγελος θεοῦ.

Note the aorist passive verbs ἤχθημεν and ὤφθη. The subject ἄγγελος follows its verb ὤφθη.

3. πῶς ἐγερθήσονται οἱ νεκροὶ καὶ πῶς ἐκβληθήσεται τὰ δαιμόνια ἐκ τῆς γῆς ταύτης;

Note future passive verbs ἐγερθήσονται and ἐκβληθήσεται. The subject νεκροὶ follows its verb ἐγερθήσονται, and the subject δαιμόνια follows its verb ἐκβληθήσεται (with the neuter plural subject taking a singular verb, as is possible in Greek). Note the demonstrative phrase ἐκ τῆς γῆς ταύτης.

4. ἡ ἀδελφὴ ὑμῶν ἐπορεύθη πρὸς τὸν λαὸν κηρύξαι τὴν ἀλήθειαν καὶ οἱ λόγοι αὐτῆς ἐγράφησαν ἐν βιβλίῳ.

Note the aorist passive verbs ἐπορεύθη and ἐγράφησαν. The aorist infinitive κηρύξαι is used here to express purpose. How is αὐτῆς being used here: emphatic? identical? or simply as a pronoun?

5. ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ τόπος οὐκ εὑρέθη τοῖς τέκνοις, ἐνεχθήσονται οὖν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ διδασκάλου.

Note the aorist passive verb εὑρέθη and the future passive ἐνεχθήσονται. Watch how the postpositive particle οὖν is in second position, and coordinate the two statements.

6. οὐκ ἐγνήσθη ὁ κακὸς τῷ προσώπῳ ταὶς ἐξουσίαις, οὕτως ἠδυνήθη πάλιν ἀπολυθῆναι.

Note the aorist passive verbs ἐγνήσθη and ἠδυνήθη as well as the aorist passive infinitive ἀπολυθῆναι (the verb ἠδυνήθη takes a complementary infinitive). The subject κακὸς follows its verb ἐγνήσθη (with προσώπῳ as a dative of means, "by his face," and ἐξουσίαις the dative used as indirect object, "to the authorities").

7. καλὰ δῶρα προσηνέχθησαν τῷ προφήτῃ, ἀλλὰ ἤθελεν αὐτὰ πεμφθῆναι τοῖς τέκνοις.

Note the aorist passive verb προσηνέχθησαν as well as the aorist passive infinitive πεμφθῆναι (the verb ἤθελεν takes a complementary infinitive). How is αὐτὰ being used here: emphatic? identical? or simply as a pronoun?

8. ἐν τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐκείνῃ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ τοῦ υἱοῦ ἡμῶν ἐθεραπεύθησαν καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν δοξάσαι τὸν θεόν.

Note the aorist passive verbs ἐθεραπεύθησαν and ἐπορεύθη. The aorist infinitive δοξάσαι is used here to express purpose. Note the demonstrative phrase ἐν τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐκείνῃ.

9. λίθοι ἐβλήθησαν εἰς τὰ πλοῖα, καὶ οἱ ὄχλοι ἐθαύμασαν ὅτι αὐτὰ οὐκ ἐλύθη.

Note the aorist passive verbs ἐβλήθησαν and ἐλύθη. The verb ἐθαύμασαν is aorist active. How is αὐτὰ being used here: emphatic? identical? or simply as a pronoun?

10. ἐβαπτίσθητε ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ καὶ ἐδιδάχθητε τὴν ὁδόν, οὕτως δὲ ἐγενήθητε πιστοὶ μαθηταί.

Note the aorist passive verbs ἐβαπτίσθητε , ἐδιδάχθητε and ἐγενήθητε. Watch how the postpositive particle δὲ is in second position, and coordinate the two statements. The nominative πιστοὶ μαθηταί is a predicate with the verb ἐγενήθητε (subject is "you").

11. ἡ ἀδελφὴ ἡμῶν ἐκρίθη ὑπὸ τῶν ἐξουσιῶν καὶ εὑρέθη πιστὴ ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτῆς .

Note the aorist passive verbs ἐκρίθη and εὑρέθη. The preposition ὑπὸ is used to express the agent of the passive verb ἐκρίθη. How is αὐτῆς being used here: emphatic? identical? or simply as a pronoun? The nominative πιστὴ is a predicate with the verb εὑρέθη (subject is "she").

12. οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἀχθήσονται πρὸς τὸν θρόνον τῆς δικαιοσύνης, καὶ τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν κατὰ τοῦ νόμου γνωσθήσονται.

Note the future passive verbs ἀχθήσονται and γνωσθήσονται. How is αὐτῶν being used here: emphatic? identical? or simply as a pronoun? The phrase κατὰ τοῦ νόμου is a predicate with the verb εὑρέθη (subject is ἔργα).

13. πῶς σωθήσονται αἱ βασιλείαι τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ;

Note the future passive verb σωθήσονται. The subject βασιλείαι follows its verb σωθήσονται. Note the demonstrative phrase τοῦ κόσμου τούτου.

14. ἄρτος καὶ οἶνος ἡτοιμάσθησαν τῷ ἀποστόλῳ, ἀλλὰ ἰδοὺ οὔτε ἔφαγεν οὔτε ἔπιεν.

Note the aorist passive verb ἡτοιμάσθησαν. The verbs ἔφαγεν and ἔπιεν are aorist active.
