8.49 Forms of the Demonstratives

As Croy points out, there are some important similarities between the forms of the demonstratives and the forms of αὐτός that you learned last week, so here is a table presenting them side by side.

Notice the following points:

• the neuter singulars end in ο (not in ον as the neuter nouns do)
• the neuter plural nominative/accusative is ταῦτα because the ending contains an alpha (all the other neuter forms begin with του)
• the masculine nominative singular ὁand the plural οἱ are proclitics, without an accent mark of their own
• the masculine nominative singular οὗτος and plural οὗτοι have a rough breathing mark

Here are the feminine forms. Notice the following points:

• the feminine genitive plural is τούτων because the ending contains an omega (all the other feminine forms begin with ταυ)
• the feminine nominative singular ἡand the plural αἱ are proclitics, without an accent mark of their own
• the feminine nominative singular αὕτη and plural αὗται have a rough breathing mark
