17.119 Neuter Nouns in - μα

Make sure you take a look at Croy section 119 which describes a particular pattern of neuter third declension nouns. All the neuter nouns you learn in this chapter follow this pattern, but later on you will learn other neuter nouns in the third declension that do not belong to this particular pattern. This pattern is easy to remember because there are so many English words derived from this family of Greek words. For example, we use the word "schema" but the adjectival form is "schematic."

You can see the neuter third declension noun paradigm side by side with the masculine and feminine paradigms in the notes to section 117.

Here are the nouns that follow this pattern which you have learned for this chapter:

στόμα στόματος στόματ- two syllable stem,
acute accent in nominative
σπέρμα σπέρματος σπέρματ- two syllable stem,
acute accent in nominative
αἷμα αἵματος αἵματ- two syllable stem,
circumflex accent in nominative
πνεῦμα πνεύματος πνεύματ- two syllable stem,
circumflex accent in nominative
ῥῆμα ῥήματος ῥήματ- two syllable stem,
circumflex accent in nominative
σῶμα σώματος σώματ- two syllable stem,
circumflex accent in nominative
ὄνομα ὀνόματος ὀνόματ- three syllable stem
θέλημα θελήματος θελήματ- three syllable stem
