19.132 Second Aorist Active Participles

Make sure you read Croy section 132 on the formation of the second aorist participles. As with the first aorist participles, the second aorist participles follow a first declension pattern for the feminine forms, and a third declension pattern for the masculine and neuter forms. As with all participles, there is no tense, so the augment is removed from the second aorist stem before you can form the participle.

Most importantly, the second aorist active participle endings strongly resemble the present active participle endings. The only difference is the accent. In all forms, the second aorist active participle endings are accented on the ending rather than on the verbal stem. This is a very distinctive feature of the aorist participle and will help you to recognize it when you are reading.

βλέπων (present active participle): "seeing"

ἰδών (aorist active participle): "seeing"

In addition, note that the feminine genitive plural has the accent characteristic of a feminine noun declension (circumflex accent on the ending), rather than the adjectival declension.
