Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

11. LEO SENEX. (Perry 481)

VIX trahit aegra Leo sua membra senilibus annis,
Viribus amissis non, velut ante, viget.
Cetera nil ideo quem tunc animalia curant,
Infestare modis omnibus ausa senem.
Sic ut Asellus iners quoque bestia calce feriret,
Robore tutandi se nihil ille valet.
Cui movet haec magnos fortuna ferenda dolores,
Quod se vis odii vexet acerba senem.
Quaeque metu cuius fera robustissima quondam
Paverit, haud ullis ausa nocere modis.
Robore confecto, cum se nunc dira sequantur
Probra, gravi quae nunc plena dolore ferat.
Publicus officii si quos geris auctor honores,
Fac ut in hac talem te statione geras:
Ne fortuna suum cum sit mutata tenorem,
Te merito vexent ausa nefanda tuo.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
