Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

143. CANIS ET SUS. (Perry 0)

AUCUPIIS seruire canes mors arte doceri,
Est exquisitae quae rationis opus.
Ingeniosa minis praestare silentia discunt,
Quas metuenda graves verba docentis habent.
Vellicat ille manu latrare parantibus aures,
Imperium discunt hac ratione sequi.
Deligit hîc [Reg: hic] illos certa de stirpe parentum,
Quos natura bonos apta, sagaxque probet.
Ex genere hoc uni Sus crassior obicit olim,
Quod tam servili conditione foret.
Cui canis, haec affert nil pene molestia damni,
Qua iucunda mihi vita paratur, ait.
Non piget ista pati me taedia, proderit olim,
Sunt siquidem fructu non caritura suo.
His erit exhaustis mihi copia larga ciborum,
Tunc quibus usque frui dante licebit hero.
Scire bonas quicumque volet feliciter artes,
Non leve discendi vincat oportet onus.
Adiunctos studiis par exhaurire labores,
Qui cupit hinc usu proveniente frui.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
