Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

119. SIMIA. (Perry 218)

FERTUR amare suos impense Simia natos,
In sobolem miro flagrat amore parens.
Quem gestare suis promptissima sustinet ulnis,
Saepeque complexu crebrius usa necat.
Una canes ergo gemino fugit anxia fetu,
Forte manu, quem plus diligit illa, tenet.
De cervice geri sed protinus incipit alter,
Hunc impune parens dulce tuetur onus.
At lassata canum vi pone premente relinquit,
Quem trepide fugiens duxerat illa manu.
Sic perit hic, arcte constringens ille lacertis
Liber ab exitio colla parentis erat.
Quae tibi profuerint, aliis ea saepius obsunt,
Quaeque iuvent alios, haec tibi saepe nocent.

The same image also occurs at Fable 272; compare also Fable 256.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
