Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

148. EQUUS ET PORCUS. (Perry 0)

ARmatum gestans equitem, qui muniit armis
Hunc equus [(printer); sic: simul] , ad pugnae laetior ibat opus.
Membra luto squalens quem Sus ubi vidit euntem,
Heus tu, tam propere quo male cautus abis?
Quod [(printer); sic: An] demptura petas ignoras proelia vitam,
Et tamen esse tibi corda superba liquet.
Huic equus: heus etiam mors te properantibus annis,
Et sine laude quidem perpetienda manet.
Nactus ubi domino sat pingue videbere corpus,
Occiderit lanii iam tua vita manu.
At mihi, si sic fata ferant, mavortia vitam
Dempserit eximii robore dextra viri.
Non ulli nimium mors debet honesta timeri,
Nam simul ignavis illa ferenda subit.

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
