TEmpore quem longo labor exercebat Asellum,
Quem fidum rigido saepe probarat hero.
Insignes operas exhauserat ille gerendo,
Membrorum iuvenis dum vigor acer erat.
At grave cum portans onus offendisset eundo
In lapidem, quem non viderat ante pedes:
Hanc secum infelix sortem deplorat Asellus,
Ac dolet indigne facta furentis heri.
Cui sic exciderint, quae fecerit ante merendo,
Ut gemat ista gravi causa dolore facit.
Hoc tulit indigne, qui rector agebat euntem,
Vox erat inclemens, plenaque verba minis.
Impetiisse ferunt vehementi crebrius ictu,
Pene frequens miserum plaga perire facit.
Fortuitam quod tam crudeli pectore culpam
Vindicet, ultorem quodque furenter agat.
Non homines curant, sibi quae benefeceris olim,
Quos modo praesenti tempore facta movent.
Uno saepe mori delicto gratia rerum,
Egregie gestas quas liquet esse, solet.
