Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

164. TESTUDO DOMIGERA. (Perry 0)

A Iove cum peterent alia his animalia donis
His alia ornari, Cochlea tale petit:
Quo sibi cumque quidem sit eundi [(printer); sic: eundi] forte cupido,
Ferre suam secum possit ut inde domum.
At quaerente Iove hanc rem sit quae causa petendi,
Huic vicinorum me metus urget, ait.
Hos experta malos mox hinc ut tuta remigrem,
Si portare domum, quo libet, inde licet.
Vicino fugienda malo vix altera pestis
Est magis, hinc vario nomine damna feres.
Sic res nulla bono felicior, ille salutem
Curat, et est prompta mente iuvare tuam.

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***
It would go better with Fable 91.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
