Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

186. GLORIATOR. (Perry 33)

IN patriam redit, unde diu quidam abfuit, urbem,
Miraque quae dictu sint, sibi visa refert.
Et sua iactando praestantia facta superbit,
Quae stolido patriis praedicat ore viris.
Est ubi sacra Deo quondam Rhodus insula Phoebo,
Hîc [Reg: Hic] praeclara sibi parta tropaea refert.
Hîc [Reg: Hic] ita saltando nos signum fiximus, inquit,
Arte sequi nemo possit ut illud opus.
Non Rhodii de quo mihi testes esse recusent,
Spectarunt oculis hi mea facta suis.
Tunc, si vera refers, ait unus ab agmine vulgi,
Quin hoc esse loco fingis inepte Rhodum?
Hîc [Reg: Hic] nunc ede tuam, quam iactas, saltibus artem,
Quid gestas alibi res tibi stulte refers?
Hanc merito laudem iactantia vana reportat,
Saepe sit auctori turpis ut inde pudor.
Ostentare, tamen quo destituare, caveto [(perhaps: caveo?)] ,
Magnifice tumido pectore turpe loqui.

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
