Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)
189. VULNERATUS A CANE. (Perry
64)
A Cane laesa fero fuerant cui corpora morsu,
Circumiens medicam forte requirit opem.
Obviat huic quidam, cui cum iam cognita res est,
Consilium stulte tale dedisse ferunt:
Nempe recens cocto pani mox ille cruorem
Illinat e crudo vulnere, pusique iubet.
Suadet ut hanc illi comedendam praebeat escam,
A quo laesa sibi sint sua membra, Cani.
Quod si consilio non huic parere recuses,
Est, ait, inde tibi certa futura salus.
Moverit haec in me, cum risu saucius inquit,
Res morsum, fuerint quotquot in urbe, Canum.
Haud merito flectes pravos ut laedere nolint,
Reddere peiores facta benigna solent.
*** The image does not fit the fable. ***
The same image appears at Fable 96, where it does fit.
Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate. |
