Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

195. VIATOR. (Perry 178)

LOngum emensus iter, languensque viator eundo,
Mercurio voti sim reus huius ait:
Numina prona sinent quod me reperire Deorum,
Huic ego dimidium reddere sponte velim.
Forte repertus amygdalina nuce saccus eunti,
Palmarum fructu quae quoque mixta fuit,
Incipit inde peti cui nucleus apta palato
Esca, carens illo testa relicta Deo est.
Quam promissa sacram ceu dona reponit in aram,
Atque ita se voti solvere dicit opus.
Intimaque oblatis de rebus, et extima reddi,
Debeat huic pacti quae ratione sui.
Nonnullos adeo furor urget avarus habendi,
Pluris ut his sua sint commoda saepe Deo.

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***
It looks like it should be an illustration for Perry 579.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
