ARBORIS aeriae de fronde canebat Aedon
More suo laeti tempore veris avis:
Hanc rapit esuriens infestis unguibus ales
Nisus, et in praedam dilaniare parat.
Hinc instare sibi cum cerneret anxia mortem,
Incipit huic tristi voce sonare preces:
Orat ut innocuam non se necet ille volucrem,
Namque mori nullo se meruisse modo.
Nec se posse refert avidam, si devoret, alvum
Huic explere, Parum magna quod esset avis.
Et grandes alias venetur ut ille volucres,
Nil prece freta tamen proficiente monet.
Huic ait ipse, datam si sponte relinquere praedam
Me iuvet, insani nomine dignus ero.
Quae tamen apparent nusquam, si forte laborem
Pro certis animo desipiente sequi.
Sunt spe maiorum qui nil praesentia curant,
Quos errare tamen fine probante liquet.
