Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

20. MONS PARTURIENS. (Perry 520)

VISUS erat gravidum prae se mons ferre tumorem,
Ominaque in gemitu parturientis erant.
Maximus unde metu mortales terror agebat,
Monstra verebantur ne qua stupenda daret.
Qui dum signa pavent instare monentia partum
Qui caret ostento, Musculus inde venit.
Sic his anxietas in risum versa quievit,
Quodque metu vano non caruere, pudet.
Saepius eventu fore quae miranda videntur,
Ridiculo nil his fine subesse liquet.

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***

(The same image appears, more appropriately, for Fable 103.)

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
