Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

215. MULUS. (Perry 315 )

HORDE Areddiderant ut obeso corpore Mulum,
Huic ea cum pascens larga dedisset herus:
Incitat ad rapidos sua iam petulantia cursus,
Et facit hunc stimulo luxuriantis agi.
Iactat honoratam sibi stirpis origine matrem,
Reddere quam celeri se pede dicit equam.
At semel urgerent cum mota pericula cursum,
Mortis anhelantem dum fuga longa quatit:
Patre recordari genitum se coepit Asello,
Corrigit huic ergo facta priora pudor.
Ex humili qui stirpe sequens emergis honores,
Ante oculos patrium pone subinde genus.
Instabilem reddunt qua multa pericula vitam,
Ac fortuna suam fallit ubique fidem.
Et fortes animos res deicit illa virorum,
Dedecus hi patriae cum meminere domus.

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***
Notice the drum; it could be an illustration for Perry 164.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
