Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

235. LEO ET VULPES. (Perry 195)

INfestare feris maledictis ausa Leaenam,
Hoc etiam Vulpes crimen habere refert:
Ederet haec quod quoque suo modo singula partu
Pignora, prae reliquis bellua vasta feris.
Cui licet una mihi partu consueverit edi,
Illa Leo proles est generosus ait.
Quam bonitas, spectanda minus tibi copia rerum est,
Omne, quod est rarum, carius esse solet.

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***
The image also appears at Fable 44, where it fits.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
