Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)
236. DE MUSCAE SUFFOCATIONE. (Perry
80)
IGnibus appositam delapsa gemebat in ollam
Musca, videns tristi morte perire suum.
Sic in ferventi moriens cum iure iaceret,
Ut me pernicies certa sequatur ait:
Nil morer ipsa mori potu satiata ciboque,
Ne doleam, potero dummodo lauta mori.
Exitio multis est saepe gulosa voluptas,
Cui, licet hac pereant efficiente, vacant.
Quorum iucundo fructu perceperis usum,
Commoda fac forti mente perire feras.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate. |
