Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

253. DE PISCATORIBUS. (Perry 0)

CUm sua iecissent piscantes retia quidam,
Copia concharum magna reducta fuit.
Quas ubi partiti comedendas protinus essent,
Nec tamen absumi posset id omne cibi:
Mercurium, gressu sese huc quae forte ferebat,
Reliquiis orant his velit ille frui.
At qui coniciens qua sese mente vocarent,
Aegre, quod facerent non sine fraude, tulit.
His ipsos quorum fastidia foeda tenebant,
Se velit invitant exsaturare cibis.
Ille iubens comedant ipsi parere recusat,
Et celer irati gestibus usus abit.
Sunt qui moliri res inconsultius audent,
Posse pares minime se quibus esse tenent.
Quique suis alios non admiscere verentur
Rebus, opem poscant hos ea causa facit.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
