Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

264. ALTERA DE PARTU TERRAE ex eodem. (Perry 0)

FActa modis olim mirandis turgida tellus
Visa quidem magnum quid paritura fuit.
Accurrunt huc finitimi, trepidantque coloni,
Deque novo partu spemque, metumque fovent.
Centimanum credunt pars una Typhoëa [Reg: Typhoea] , montes
Pars erepturos una sed esse putat.
Rupta brevem tellus tunc incipit edere Murem,
Est in ridiculos res ita versa iocos.
Magnificis semper promissis credere noli,
Credentes temere fallere saepe solent.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
