Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

279. DE COLUMBA ET LUTO. (Perry 0)

CAndida praecipiti delata Columba volatu
In madidum, sic est quo maculata, lutum.
Quo ridente parum moror emendabile damnum,
Illa doloris habens tale levamen ait:
Est mea mundities, at tu squalescere gaudes,
Hoc te perpetuo, me velut illa iuvat.
Dixit, et elimem iam puri fluminis undam
Accedens maculas eluit illa suas.
Possit ut immeritis aspergi noxia labes:
Illa tamen vero nulla patente manet.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
