Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

289. DE PROMETHEO ET FRATRE eius Epimetheo. (Perry 0)

COeperat effigies hominum formare Prometheus
In quadam, fabricam quae dabat apta, specu:
Illius huc venisse ferunt Epimethea fratrem,
Rex alias illo forsan agente suas.
Qui pulchras operum species ubi vidit, et artem,
Mox imitatrices coepit habere manus.
Deque luto formare rudi simulacra virorum,
Hac fratrem cupiens arte referre suum.
Dicitur haec etiam sollers animasse Prometheus,
Vidit ubi forsan mixta iacere suis.
Quae tamen esse potest longe diversa probari,
Quod non illa forent unius artis opus.
Posteritas testetur adhuc ceu vafra Promethei,
Nata parum soboles fratre parente sapit.
Nec sunt naturis homines, nec moribus idem,
Hic hebet, ingenii viribus ille valet.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
