Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

290. DE EQUO. (Perry 0)

COmedebat Equum generosae stirpis origo,
Qui specie praestans viribus acer erat:
Huius ubi quondam sessorem terga ferebant,
Et Phalaris belle corpora compta forent.
Subsultans, gestuque ferox, animoque superbit,
Calcar ubi lateri subdidit huius eques.
Auditoque tubae sonitu tremit, et micat aures,
Pugnae stare loco nescius optat opus.
Cruda fatigassent huic sed cum proelia vires,
Iamque afflicta gravi vulnere membra forent.
Vix servatus ubi tunc ad praesepe rediret,
Non magis huic animi signa ferocis erant.
Demittens aures, iram, flatusque remittit,
Estque recumbentem pigra secuta qives.
Dulcis inexperto belli non vera voluptas,
Nam mala non illi parva subesse solent.

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***
The same image also appears at Fable 173, but does not fit. It looks like an illustration for Fable 498.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
