Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

36. LUPUS ET HIRCUS. (Perry 695)

INSECTANTE Lupo fugientem protinus Hircum
Aeriis rupes excipit alta iugis.
Obsedisse ferunt hanc illum longius hostem,
Depulit inde tamen non toleranda fames.
Illa facultatem quaerendi praebuit Hirco
Non procul hinc gelidas amnis euntis aquas.
Apparent fluvii sed cui procera sub undis
Cornua, quaeque levem reddere crura valent.
Quae contemplantem est iam mira secuta voluptas,
Nunc fugisse Lupum qui sibi turpe putat.
Sed nimis incautum dum visa moratur imago,
Non observato praeda fit ille Lupo.
Clam subit, et frustra clamantem parce trucidat,
Iamque cibum diro faucibus ore facit.
Stultitiae meritas luit usque superbia poenas,
Nil minus hoc vicio scit quia ferre Deus.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
