Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

85. ANSER ET GRUS. (Perry 27)

PAbula dum prato Grus carpit et Anser eodem,
Insidias illis qui meditetur, adest.
Quo veniente levem sua pernix ocius aufert
Ala Gruem, simili non valet Anser ope.
Impedit hunc gravitas damnosa, fugamque moratur,
Aucupe confestim sic capiente perit.
Hostica vis domitis cum civibus occupat urbem,
Protinus illaeso corpore pauper abit.
At qui dives opum est, hostiles ferre catenas
Cogitur, et servo vincula more pati.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
