Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

136. AMNIUM SILENTIA. (Perry 0)

RUsticus undosum tuto transiret ut amnem,
Quaerit, aquam placide qua videt ire, vadum.
Esse reperturum quod spes hac irrita fingit,
Qua nullo strepitu leniter amnis abit.
Esse vadum credens hac cum transire pararet,
Altior est istic unda reperta locis.
Tum decurrit ubi torrentior, occupat amnem
Hic qua tutus eat, repperit ille vadum.

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***
This image also appears at Fable 209, where it fits better.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
