Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

213. INIMICI. (Perry 68)

INTER sese odiis duo qui crudelibus ardent,
Hos vehit una freti credita navis aquis.
Prora dat huic, illi pars forsitan ultima sedem,
Dumque feruntur, aquis mota procella furit:
Sic ut nunc dubiam desperet uterque salutem,
His iam certa suum signa perire probant.
Tum residens puppi coniuncta parte requirit;
Pars prius utra vagae sit peritura ratis.
Tunc proram citius mergi dicente magistro,
Mors mihi non igitur iam gravis, inquit, erit.
Ante meum mergi videam dum fluctibus hostem,
AEquora me cogant quam violenta mori.
Sunt, quos nulla metu subeunda pericula terrent,
Hi videant hostes si prius ista pati.
Sponte mori sic iam non ipse recusat Achilles,
Hectora victor ubi straverat ante manu?

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***
It also appears at Fable 32, where it does fit.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
