Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

276. DE FORMICA ET APIBUS. (Perry 0)

QUam volucrem natura datis effecerat alis,
Se Formica gregi consociarat Apum.
Respuit alveolis haec brumae tempore claudi,
Ad genus illa suum causa redire facit.
At vacuam pellunt, nilque in commune ferentem,
Formicae, secum non habitare sinunt.
Cereaque obstructo iam tecta foramine non hanc
Admittunt, recipi non potis illa fuit.
Quemque suo secura loco consistere res est,
Qui sapit hunc temere deseruisse cavet.

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***

(The same image appears, more appropriately, for Fable 30.)

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
