Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

278. DE ONAGRO. (Perry 0)

SIlvestres Asini, Graius quos dicit Onagros,
Esse pigri caelo nube carente solent.
At si turbato caligent aere nubes,
Lascivire ferunt, laetitiamque sequi.
Simia quorum uni datur obvia Sole sereno,
Tam nitido tristem quae videt esse die.
Et cur aspicio talem, cur tristis es, inquit,
Tene sat his signis ipse valere putem?
Sic soleo, respondit, ubi est sine nubibus aer,
Non nisi sit plane turbidus, ille vivat.
Huic ea: quod situ mundo laetante laboras,
At tristante soles laetior esse, vale.
Sunt, ita perversis gaudent qui moribus uti,
Ut gestu faciant conveniente nihil.

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***
This image recurs at Fable 139, and also at Fable 80 where it does fit.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
