Phryx Aesopus (Osius, 1574)

66. AQUILA ET MONEDULA. (Perry 2)

STulta videns Aquilam raptare Monedula praedam
Agnum, sperat idem se quoque posse sequi.
Sed gregis illa duci dum sublatura per auras
Involat, implicitis unguibus haeret avis.
A custode gregum quae cum iam capta fuisset,
Accipit hanc dono patre dicante puer.
Ille vacans ludo qua deinceps sustinet uti,
Hanc Aquilae poenam par sibi visa luit.
Quemque suas se fas metiri iudice vires,
His maiora sequi turpe furoris opus.

This image from Fable 197 suits this fable:

*** The drawing does not fit the fable. ***
This same image shows up at Fable 179, where it fits better.

Phryx Aesopus Habitu Poetico, by Hieronymus Osius, 1574 (artist not identified). Available online at the University of Mannheim. This book clearly recycles a set of images from another book of Aesop's fables. In some cases, the illustration does not match the fable shown, and in some cases I have not been able to identify what fable a given illustration is supposed to illustrate.
